Eating Your Way to More Beautiful-Looking Skin and Hair

By: Lucy Wyndham
With the holiday season over, you're likely less tempted to indulge in all the delectable treats at your disposal and more motivated to shed a few extra pounds. It is important to include high doses of nutrient-rich whole-foods in your diet if you want to continue being healthy and looking your best in 2018.
Food for healthy skin and hair
Fish that are high in omega-3 fatty acids have countless benefits in terms of personal beauty such as shiny hair and glowing skin. Up to 3% of the hair shaft consists of these fatty acids and they are also found in the cell membranes on your scalp and in the natural oils that ensures that your hair and scalp are well hydrated.  Salmon, mackerel, anchovies and sardines are all exceptional sources of omega-3 fatty acids although regular doses of fish oil will also suffice.
Red peppers
Red peppers contain more skin-boosting Vitamin C than oranges do. Vitamin C is a precursor to collagen production as well as a potent antioxidant. When your skin is exposed to light, free radicals are created that ounce around your skin causing an ageing effect. Antioxidants attach themselves to these free radicals, neutralizing them so that they can’t cause any further damage. Including red peppers into your diet at frequent intervals will leave your skin looking and feeling younger-looking. Collagen also plays a substantial role in ensuring that your lips remain smooth and pout-perfect at all times.
Avocado oil
While everyone has been raving about the health properties of avocados for a while already, it is only in recent times that avocado oil has joined the party. Avos are loaded with vitamins A, D and E as well as omega-9 fatty acids – one of the building blocks of a healthy, glowing skin.  All these nutrients contribute towards evening out your skin tone and keeping your skin healthy and supple. Due to its high smoke point, avocado oil can be used with ease to sauté and roast vegetables or to drizzle on a soup or salad.
 Eggs
Not only are they known as the perfect protein but eggs are also a great contributor towards healthy, shiny hair.  One of the key ingredients in eggs is sulfur which aids in liver function and vitamin B absorption. It is also required for keratin and collagen production which helps to create and maintain strong nails, shiny hair and glowing skin.
Pumpkin seeds
This superfood is packed with vitamins A and K, omega-3 fatty acids as well as zinc, all of which are vitally important when it comes to constructing a healthy hair shaft. Pumpkin seeds are also rich in vitamin C which is essential is in the production of sebum, the natural oil found in your skin which aids in protecting and repairing it.
Collard greens
Green veg is very good for our health in general with collard greens being one of the most underrated. Collards are extremely rich in vitamin C with one cup providing 70% of the daily recommended allowance. As previously mentioned Vitamin C is essential for collagen production, making your skin look and feel younger. By adding collard greens to your diet you will soon be looking more younger-looking and radiant than you actually are.
The age-old saying ’you are what you eat’ has never rung truer with more and more individuals becoming astutely aware of how their diets can influence not only their health but their appearance as well. By simply designing your lifestyle around a diet of nutritious, balanced meals featuring the food sources mentioned above you can guarantee yourself healthy-looking, radiant skin and luscious locks that will be the envy of everyone you know.
